From Darkness To Light | Photography Exhibition in New York

Στο παρελθόν έχω ανεβάσει κάποιες φωτογραφικές συμμετοχές μου (εδώ κι εδώ) στο σάιτ Broken Light Collective, μια φωτογραφική διαδικτυακή πλατφόρμα με στόχο την ευαισθητοποίηση του κόσμου στο θέμα της ψυχικής υγείας, καθώς και την δημιουργία και υποστήριξη μιας κοινότητας φωτογράφων που αντιμετωπίζουν οι ίδιοι προσωπικά ή στο κοντινό τους περιβάλλον τις επιπτώσεις των ψυχικών ασθενειών. Η Broken Light Collective είναι πλέον μια μη κερδοσκοπική οργάνωση, και από τις 26 Ιουνίου ώς τις 13 Αυγούστου παρουσιάζει την πρώτη έκθεση φωτογραφίας με τίτλο "From Darkness To Light" στο χώρο της Fountain Gallery στη Νέα Υόρκη. Ανάμεσα σε 36 καλλιτέχνες από όλο τον κόσμο και 42 έργα, συμμετέχω κι εγώ με δύο φωτογραφίες μου, οι οποίες θα πωλούνται σε περιορισμένα αντίτυπα και ποσοστά τον εσόδων θα πηγαίνουν στην ενίσχυση της Broken Light Collective και της Fountain Gallery.

Οι φωτογραφίες είναι ένα αυτοπορτρέτο και μία φωτογραφία από αυτή τη σειρά φωτογραφιών Inhabit που βγάλαμε πριν δύο χρόνια με την Αναστασία στο ερειπωμένο σπίτι πάνω από το παλιό υδραγωγείο της Καβάλας. Περιττό να πω ότι δεν το ΄χω πιστέψει ακόμα. Παρόλα αυτά όσο περίμενα να ολοκληρωθούν τα διαδικαστικά και να γίνει η επίσημη ανακοίνωση της έκθεσης τόλμησα να ρίξω μια ματιά της τελευταίας στιγμής για τιμές αεροπορικών εισητηρίων για Νέα Υόρκη... ας πούμε απλά πως το ταξίδι αυτό αναβάλλεται επ' αόριστον. Χίλια ευχαριστώ όμως στην Άννα Μπάλλα, που μέσω ίντερνετ είδε μια δημοσίευση μέσω Facebook για την συμμετοχή μου και μπόρεσε να μας στείλει φωτογραφίες από τον χώρο της γκαλερί - και την βιτρίνα από όπου φαίνεται η μία φωτογραφία μου! The kindness of strangers που λένε και στο χωριό μου :)

Συγχαρητήρια σε όλους τους καλλιτέχνες και πάνω από όλα στην Danielle Hark, ιδρύτρια της Broken Light Collective, για την όμορφη πρωτοβουλία της και την επιμονή και το πάθος της για την πραγματοποίηση των στόχων της.

In the past, my photography has been featured in the Broken Light Collective website (see here and here). Broken Light is an online gallery where photographers of all levels can display their work as well as inspire one another to keep creating and fighting mental illness that affects themselves or their loved ones. Broken Light Collective has recently gone beyond web status to become a non-profit organization, and from June 26 to August 13 the first live gallery exhibit is running at the non-profit Fountain Gallery in NYC called "From Darkness to Light". Two of my photos were chosen to be displayed among 42 works by 36 artists from all over the world. Framed prints will be up for sale in a number of copies and percentage of the proceeds will support both the Broken Light Collective and Fountain Gallery.

The two photos that I'm contributing are a self-portrait and a photo from the Inhabit series we did a couple of years ago with Anastasia in an abandoned house near my hometown. Needless to say, I haven't yet realised the whole exhibition thing is happening and I feel extremely honoured to be a part of it! While I was waiting for the official announcement and the final details, I did a last minute search for plane tickets to New York... Well let's just say the trip will have to wait for some time, at least until I win the lottery. I would like to extend my gratitude towards Anna Mpalla, who found a Facebook post about the exhibition and provided us with photos from the gallery! Gotta love the kindness of strangers :)

Congratulations to all the contributing artists and mostly to Danielle Hark, founder of Broken Light Collective for her beautiful initiative and her perseverance and passion for her goal.
